Aarti Sunder

A film/interface project that explores the lives of remote gig platform workers between India and USA, mostly working for Amazon's Mechanical Turk (Mturk). The film addresses an intentionally opaque space of labor. Platforms like Mturk employ thousands on a short- to very short-term, non-contractual basis. Labour here is outsourced, always available, scalable and flexible. While these are the reasons for which this work is in great demand, it also for these precise reasons that workers are left precarious and vulnerable. The film also suggests that, for all the black-box design of the interfaces we employ, the "digital" and "algorithmic" are not as automated as we assume.
